"The themes to which the icons refer can be classified into two general categories: portrait icons (for example portraits of saints, Mother of God of the Sign, Christ Pantocrator) and icons with scenic subjects. Some of these subjects have also inspired masterpieces by great musicians. H. Biber (18th century), a Bohemian, lived between Salzburg and Vienna. Listed among the greatest violinists and composers, as such he was very famous for his expertise. One of his 36-voice mass was attributed to Bach until the middle of the last century.
Some of the “Sonatas of the S.S. Rosario”, in which Biber describes the mysteries one by one, prescribing a different tuning for the violin for each sonata to better differentiate the spiritual climates.
Of those presented tonight, numerous icons with similar subjects have been painted over the centuries.
J.S. Bach needs no introduction. However, it is a source of new studies (Helga Thone: chaconne, dance or funeral monument? Leipzig 1994) to have identified that the six sonatas and partitas for solo violin were completed, and the famous chaconne written practically in one go, in a moment of the deepest drama. Returning from a trip, Bach found that his young wife had suddenly died, leaving him with four small children. At this moment, that absolute masterpiece that are the six sonatas and partitas for solo violin took definitive form in practically a few days. In the sonata in C major, whose fugue is the most complex example of polyphonic mastery entrusted to a monodic instrument, there are numerous self-citations (musical themes), taken from various chorales previously composed by Bach, all
on the subject of Pentecost, just as in the first sonata the quotations refer to the Nativity and in the second to the Passion.
Vivaldi's Concerto dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady Mary the Virgin is one of the two that the author dedicated to this festivity (August 15), deeply felt in his Venice.
In contrast to the meditated and painful depth of the previous compositions, of an extroverted and joyful character, it will conclude the evening with a flash of serene Mediterranean brightness."
