INTRODUCTION

The large collection dedicated by Fonè to Mascagni (obtained cooperating with the C.E.L. -Teatro di Livorno -Teatro di Tradizione in its Plurennial Project) is enriched by an important title: Il Piccolo Marat. Its first performance, (Teatro Costanzi, Rome, 1921) was one of the last successes of the musician from Leghom -staged by the C.E.L. in 1989, on the occasion of the celebrations for the bicentenary of the French Revolution at the Teatro all'Aperto di Villa Mimbelli -and sanctioned the encounter between a group of young singers carefully selected and two great personalities of the show business: the soprano Magda Olivero -verist interpreter of historical importance -and the director Virginio Puecher, died before bis time the following year. The staging of the opera was the conclusion of a vocal and dramatic workshop held by the two illustrious artists which studied in depth the fundamental components of the verist musical theatre, the connection between the word, gesture and psychological likelihood of the characters, pruned by every superficial disguise. An experiment which succeeded in merging with good results the process of forming and training new generations of singers of high artistic level which has characterized the opera seasons of the Teatro di Livorno in the latest years: the promotion of young artists -perhaps the great future Mascagni’s interpreter - in performances marked by a very accurate preparation. We hope this contribution will be appreciated for its intrinsic quality and represent a worthy cultural profile of our town.
